As has been described before this is one of a number of surviving police boxes dotted around the UK. Glasgow has quite a few and some of them have been given a new lease of life- selling hot coffee etc. They were originally used by the police as places to hold people who had been arrested and required transport to a station, this in the days when most police officers were on foot, somewhere to write up their notes or to call for help.
