Rhine Gorge - Ruins of Ehrenfels Castle
The ruins of Ehrenfels Castle are all that is left of a once powerful fortress that was one of the defensive structures intended to protect territory controlled by the Archbishop of Mainz. The castle was also used to enforce toll collection from river traffic. It was used for centuries but destroyed in the late 1600's. It has been in ruins since then.
