I had never tried shooting the night sky before, but thought that Joshua Tree National Park would be a good place to start. We drove out into the desert as the sun sank lower on the horizon, and found a decent area by nightfall. I only had my camera and tripod—no remote shutter or timer—and crossed my fingers, hoping for the best. Looking back at the shots I had captured, I would say I got something not too far off.
