Breaking Through the Surface to Breathe
This shot was captured during a whale watch tour several miles from the shoreline of Bar Harbor, Maine on September 12th, 2017. Among the sights - including harbor seals and gulls on rocks - was this pod of white-sided dolphins, one breaking through the surface to spurt water through its blowhole to breathe. Named by John Edward Gray in 1828, this species is covered by the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas (ASOCBANS).
