We were rounding a bend in the trail at the Pelican Island NWR and my wife reached out and stopped me. This beautiful Great Egret was standing on the trail, looking into the mangroves. We never disturbed it, allowing for a close-up. I have never taken note of the little "beard" as shown here on this splendid wader.
