A fire brigade helicopter hovers above fissure 8 as it erupts and turns the sky crimson, red and pink. This was the surreal reality for weeks on end during the historic 2018 Kilauea eruption. Having been airborne myself a few times I could feel the heat even from 3000 feet and this helicopter was much lower to carry out a check of the progress of the lava as there were numerous properties in the vicinity. Over 700 homes were lost in total either from direct contact with lava or from brush fires.
