Saw the color from several hundred feet, and the closer I got, the more it looked like a hand-crafted valentine that someone had just stuck in ground. A prank! No, not for a rainy day in early September, I decided. Closer examination confirmed a ectomycorrhizal mushroom, a Russula - most likely a species from the Russula emetica group. Valentine by Mother Nature!
