Every New Year´s Day many locals go to Carcavelos beach early in the morning for the first dive in the sea. The tradition says it prevents illnesses all year long as well as granting the courageous ones with success. They come dressed in vintage 1920's swimming suits, as Santa Claus, convicts or wearing funny coloured wigs. Traditional folk music bands join the party playing live in the beach among the divers, all ending with snacks and lunch.
