Battery Duportail
My wife at the top of the steps to access the Fort Morgan Battery Duportail. The Duportail is a concrete gun emplacement constructed across the parade of the fort between 1898 and 1899 that mounted two 12-inch breech loading rifles known as “Disappearing Guns”. Each gun used 268 pounds of explosive to fire a 1,046 pound shell up to 8 1/2 miles. Fort Morgan is a Third System masonry fort built between 1819 and 1833. Standing guard where the bay meets the Gulf of Mexico.
