Gunners View
On the top wall of Fort Morgan’s Battery Duportail looking out to the Gulf of Mexico. The amphitheater looking on the left is where one of the two 12-inch breech loading rifles known as “Disappearing Guns” once stood. Each gun used 268 pounds of explosive to fire a 1,046 pound shell up to 8 1/2 miles. Fort Morgan stands guard where the bay meets the Gulf of Mexico. The fort played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the American Civil War.
