    Iron rings along the wall of the Battery Duportail in Fort Morgan were use to help anchor the two 12-inch breech loading rifles known as “Disappearing Guns”. Each gun used 268 pounds of explosive to fire a 1,046 pound shell up to 8 1/2 miles. Fort Morgan is a Third System masonry fort built between 1819 and 1833. Standing guard where the bay meets the Gulf of Mexico. The fort played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the American Civil War.
