The Claron Formation is a geological structure that forms the top step of the Grand Staircase in Southern Utah. Beginning about 65 million years ago sediments were laid down in a shallow freshwater lake over a period of about 25 million years. As sand, silt and limestone layers accumulated some of the iron in the layers oxidized with changing climate. After the lake bed dried up these layers were eventually revealed through faulting.
