Standing on one side of the path while being hypnotised by the scene: almost at the end of a very steep climb, this athlete is pushing his body to the limit, while maintaining a visible mental focus. The excited crowd cheering in the background doesn't alter his focus. The adjective "steep" describes not only the climb itself but also the limits beyond which a man can be pushed.
