    Reported by:

Montsegur, Ariège, Midi-Pyrénées, Occitanie, France: The medieval castle at Montsegur. This was a refuge for the Cathars, a breakaway sect from the Catholic Church, which they regarded as corrupt. The Pope engaged mercenaries to hunt them down. They refused a order to surrender and were burned to death in 1244.
