Salt Pans at Maras
This was one of my favorite places in Peru. The salt pans are maintained by local families. Salt water from the mountain is fed to each pan through a system of canals, where the water evaporates and the pan is filled again. They do this repeatedly until there is a thick layer of salt. Each pan can get 3 to 4 harvests a year, and a bag of 50 kg will sell for around 25 USD.
