Rituals of Charak
This photo was taken in Bardhhaman, India. On the occasion of Charak or Gajan, which is celebrated mainly in the last two days of the month of Chaitra (around mid April) in rural Bengal to appease Lord Shiva. The festival is associated with devotees painting their bodies, playing with fire, undergoing body piercings etc to signify a form of penance.
