Young Himba-woman grooming her braids
The women of the Namibian tribe perform a daily beauty ritual. They burn incense and cover themselves with otjize paste. This red-tinged combination of fat and ochre pigment protects them from drought, heath and insect bites. It leaves their skin and hair smelling fresh. The color symbolizes mother earth & blood which stands for the essence of life. This young woman called Uatuaerera wears a thick necklace which symbolizes that she never had children before and that she is ready for marriage.
