If you paid close attention to people's academic regalia(cap/gown/hood), you can tell the degree they have. In USC, students with red caps/gowns are in doctoral degrees(PhD, MD, JD, PharmD etc.), and students with black caps/gowns are in either undergrad or master degrees.
