Nestled within Franconia Notch State Park, swiftly moving waters flow from Cascade Brook and plunge 22 feet through a narrow gorge. Soaring walls of granite that frame Kinsman Falls rise as you pass it to your left before being encased by dense pine during the 1250-foot ascent to Lonesome Lake. My ankles were weak from scrambling rocks and I shivered from wading across the brook as the same icy waters rushed past me, surrounding me in all directions. Looking up, I couldn’t even see the clouds.
