Years ago when I was in college in New Mexico, this vast volcanic caldera was off limits for hiking and cross-country skiing, because it was owned by Texas cattle ranchers. I never dreamed I would one day hike there, with my daughter balanced on my wife's shoulders. But some innovative private/public land swaps created the Valle Grande National Preserve ... and here we are!
