Guided tour of Bergen took us to the quarters where, once upon a time, poor German lads who came to join the thriving fishing industry stayed, with aspirations of becoming well off some day. Neither light nor heating was allowed in the tenements at Bryggen because of the danger for fire. Human life has never been easy!
