This boy was an eighth grader I taught during my year on Namdrik Atoll, a far-flung atoll of the Marshall Islands. I had just arrived to the island a couple weeks prior and could barely speak the language. Language barrier aside, the boy in this photo, named John Lang, offered to take me on a tradit
