Ha Long Bay is a must visit place in Vietnam. An alternative to the usual boat trip with an overnight stay is to privately hire a small boat from Cat Ba or Cai Beo (a small village near Cat Ba). The boat is very small, you have to sit on the floor (no seats!) but the scenery is so fantastic that you soon forget that the floor boards are hard.
