    Reported by:

A curious Humpback Whale changed its course and dove beneath Karen Hatch on her kayak in the Monterey Bay. This whale met up with an inquisitive friend after resurfacing, and they both returned and spent about two minutes with us. I was about thirty feet away from Karen with the sun behind me when I took three shots of this encounter. When the whale came 10 feet from Karen, it threw its fluke in the air and slid on its side as it dove in a playful manner (this lasted 3/4 of a second).
