Inside an Asmat Bivak
A view from a bivak (bivouac), a temporary settlement for the people of Asmat while they hunt and gather, here in Sawa Erma, Papua. A bivak would consist of three to four families; the number of stoves indicate the number of families living inside a bivak. Houses may come very expensive, though in many cases houses follow the same arrangements as bivaks. Primus Takane, holding the ax, Joseph Jo, in yellow, and Markus Biarma, further in, are three of the four heads of family living in this bivak.
