During the spring and summer vanilla leaf forms a lush green carpet in the woods on Hope Island. As fall approaches the plants begin to wither and decompose. Rich mulch feeds micro-organisms and replentishes the soil as the process is repeated year after year. The more resistent veins in the leaves create a lace-like pattern.
