Preserving memories through the preservation of slides taken with my Pentax SLR between 1982 and 1984 in Mauritania. This woman was my best friend in the Saharan desert village where I lived, which is probably why she was so comfortable in front of my camera. Sadly, her child died of measles shortly after this picture was taken. The time I spent in Mauritania inspired my choice of career with the UN, and led to a lifetime of work in support of global health.
