Ribbon snake tongue-flick
I took this shot while hiking and looking specifically for reptiles and amphibians. I was at Snake Road in southern Illinois. Each year twice-a-year, the road is closed to vehicles and allow the snakes that inhabit the area to migrate across the road safely. The road-closing also allows people like me to walk the road and observe and photograph the snakes. The snake tongue-flicking here is a western ribbon snake (Thamnophis proximus).
