Bread and salt have been a symbol of hospitality in Serbs to anyone who happens to come by. "If hungry, give him to eat; if persecuted, hide him; if poorly dressed, give him clothes; if wounded, dress his wounds; help the weak, the sick, the persecuted, don’t ask what happened, who he is and where he comes from, but offer hospitality and help, and “God will pay you”."
