We spent some time with a large herd in Serengeti National Park last month. Quietly watching them, listening to the sound of the grass being ripped out by their trunks and chewed. A younger bull challenged the older male. They softly padded the ground, we could hear them breathing and their tusks knocking together as they sized each other up. It was quite gentle at first.
