Close inspection of a Sea Star, probably a Fromia species, reveals a surface resembling a cross between tire treads and the comb of a beehive. Why echinoderms such as the Sea Star are nearly the sole representatives of pentagonal symmetry in the animal kingdom remains a mystery. I found this example on a reef at Sodwana Bay, South Africa.
