I woke up before dawn to drive historic backroads from Joshua Tree to Las Vegas to visit a friend there, who was in hospice care at his home; he'd been sick undergoing chemotherapy and radiation for a year. I had a great 30 minute visit and a memorable five hours of driving in the scenic Mojave Desert. My friend passed away about 10 days later; I was glad I made the trip.
