    Reported by:

She is a Hindu woman in Madhurai, a district in South India. During a temple festival, she pierces her tongue with "Soolam", a weapon that her diety holds and applies sacred powder to the devotees. It is a way of sacrificing herself to god for her family's well being. I shot this woman using a 50 mm lens, low angled to show clearly her tongue pierced.
