This massive stone castle in Guimaraes, Portugal, rises from native rock. Legend has it the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, was born early in the 11th century inside the walls. The castle was already old at that time! Portugal still has superb ancient and anachronistic structures including castles standing intact because the country was never bombed in either world war.
