For over 150 years Malta was the base of the British Mediterranean Fleet. This was the fleet's Naval Hospital built in 1832 and proving its worth soon after during the Crimean War. The structure is a cot lift built in 1906 to facilitate transfer of injured servicemen from ship to shore. Many Gallipoli wounded passed through its doors. Many did not make it out alive.
