It's harvest time in Scotland & the fruit growing season is one of the longest & latest in all of Europe as a consequence of the northerly latitude & cool climate. The pears in my Perthshire orchard are as hard as walnuts but this means they can be stored throughout the Winter & eaten when they ripen in the Spring.
