    Off the coast of Florida from central Florida to the Keys are barrier islands…themselves once coral reefs. Just offshore, less than a quarter mile, are the living reefs where many ships foundered and lives lost before lighthouses, charts and other modern tools came into being. This shot was taken from the historic House of Refuge looking down the beach. You can see the ancient coral rock jutting out over the beach below and how storms continue to bring debris and seaweed up to and on the beach.
