The Old Bakery
Deep within the old fortified walls of Mazagan a busy Moroccan baker deftly moves trays of almond cookies still hot from baking in the wood-fired oven, onto cooling racks. This same bakery was used by the Portuguese to feed their troops in the 1500s when Mazagan was built. I discovered this place unexpectedly, while exploring the nearby city of El Jadida. Cité Portugaise (Mazagan) is a world heritage site, offering a glimpse into medieval life in a Moroccan port city. The cookies were delicious.
