Painting Heather on the Moors, England
Setting out for a 5-mile walk across the Saddleworth Moor on the Pennine Way northwest of Manchester, U.K., I came across local artist Bruce Mulcahy painting the late-summer heather. As I looked over his shoulder, I was struck by the harmony of colors on the canvas and the moors. The stone-paved walk beyond him leads over Black Hill, named for the peat that had been exposed during the Industrial Revolution.
