Tarantula hawks are large blue-black wasps, most with orange wings. Notice that this species has three ocelli, or simple eyes, on top of its head in addition to its large compound eyes. Females can be recognized by their curled antennae. They have an interesting life cycle in which females seek out a tarantula, paralyze it, and bury it in a burrow, laying a single egg. The wasp larvae then feed on the paralyzed spider.
