North Dakota Winter – Lonely
The scene shows an abandoned farmstead, certainly the site of some prosperity and much hope long ago. During winter white-outs (see previous photo) the distance between house and barn could be deadly. Farmers died by getting disoriented, and missing the barn. As a result, ropes were strung between the house and barn for a farmer to grasp as a guide in those severe conditions. What a lonesome place this must have been when winter imposed isolation
