Wide Angle Walruses
Almost every day we would get out of our ice-strengthened ship and into inflatable rubber boats (called Zodiacs) and go on excursions to the pack ice or the remote islands of the Norwegian Arctic. After going to a walrus hauling site we were quietly watching the walrus from the water’s edge when, in ones and twos, they started approaching us and finally got within 10 feet. It felt incredible to make wide angle images of these 1.5 tonne males, armed with massive ivory tusks.
