During a visit to the sand dunes of Island Beach State Park in early winter, I was impressed by a large field of dune grasses, beach heather and lichens in one particular area of the barrier island. It was interesting to see the variation in muted shades of white and brown, and knowing that the colors would be very different in the midst of summer.
