    Founded in 1565 by the Portuguese, Rio de Janeiro, or simply Rio, is the second largest city in Brazil and the sixth largest city in the Americas by population. This section of the city overlooking the Sugarloaf mountain, the Atlantic Ocean and the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches have been identified by UNESCO as World Heritage since 2012 in the category Cultural Landscape. Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Summer Paralympics.
