Modern Mongolian nomads
In June 2014, I traveled to Mongolia and toured the Eastern Steppe--the largest expanse of grasslands in the world. I wasn't sure what to expect given that endless open space is rare in the U.S. It was a little like being on the open ocean--the grasses come in a million shades and you have a 360 view of the horizon. In this temporary village I loved watching the children. Some were on horseback, some were on motor bike—like this young boy driving past horse and cart to get to his family’s herd.
