My mother struggled with bi-polar type 1 her entire life. I witnessed her experience severe mania, which included terrifying hallucinations, only to then fall in deep depressive episodes. She was hospitalized several times, and I know she often had to suffer alone due to society's general misunderstanding of this illness. Using some toy finger lights and a long exposure, this image is a self portrait in which I hope to convey visually what it feels like to be bi-polar.
