In the Chicha Tent
The Guna Yala don't see the consumption of alcohol like westerners do. There isn't alcohol abuse in communities and drinking is reserved for special occasions. This is one such occasion. For weeks leading up to the celebration, communities begin preparing chicha fuerte (strong juice) to consume to express happiness in celebration of their autonomy which they won from the Panamanian government almost 90 years ago. Here are ladies dressed up in their traditional clothing enjoying chicha fuerte.
