Declared extinct in the 1800s, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center embarked on a project in 2003 to restore native wood bison to their natural habitat. Plans to release nearly 100 bison were finalized in May 2014 and they were encouraged to breed in preparation for a 2015 release. In Alaska to train teachers, I heard of their birth and rushed out to see them. I was able to capture this newborn calf and cow kissing after feeding as they moved in front of the spectacular Mountain range.
