solitary monk
Merit-making is the most common path undertaken by Burmese monks. This path involves the observance of the Five Precepts (commitments to abstain from harming living beings, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying and intoxication) and accumulation of good merit through charity and good deeds (dana) in order to obtain a favorable rebirth on the next incarnation.
