While visiting a Maasai village, we were encouraged to purchase some local art and craft work created by the Maasai women, as the money would apparently go towards the community. The wares were displayed in a large circular structure, but the women were not allowed to enter and bargain with us. The bargaining was done by a warrior while the women watched from outside, through a metal screen.
